Mayor Patrick Collins dies suddenly in Virginia.

Collins dies from pneumonia dies while on vacation in Hot Springs, Virginia. According to John T. Galvin, “Collins’ death marked the end of Democratic unity in the city of Boston . . . [as] personal rivalries replaced party discipline, personal machines replaced party organization, and disunity became the permanent state of the Democratic party in Boston.”
